Just a few kilometres from Le Arcate lies the picturesque Laveno Mombello and Lake Maggiore. From here you can take boat trips and tours around the famous Borromean islands and visit sites such as the botanical garden on Bella Island. Recognised as one of the most beautiful examples of a Baroque garden in Europe, it is meandering, colourful and the perfect choice for a magical day out.
Another draw of Lake Maggiore is undoubtedly the hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso , a monastery overlooking the east bank of the lake. Legend has it that in the twelfth century, a merchant and moneylender, Alberto Besozzi, escaped a shipwreck and built the monastery dedicated to St. Catherine of Alessandie at his own expense, and spent the rest of his life in prayer.
